48 indicted in new jersey cockfighting ring bust

MAYS LANDING, N.J. – A grand jury in Atlantic County indicted 48 individuals Wednesday in connection with an illegal cockfighting operation, authorities said.

An investigation led by Det. Mark Kienzle of the Galloway Township Police Department uncovered electronic invitations to a planned cockfight in March 2024. Law enforcement agencies, including the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office, intervened and stopped the event at an arena specifically built for rooster fighting.

Authorities arrested the defendants and charged them with offenses such as animal cruelty, gambling on animal fighting, and resisting arrest. Officers also seized dozens of roosters, many of which had injuries, as well as four dogs, three of which were kept in poor conditions. One required emergency surgery.

The alleged organizer, Jose Madera, and an attendee, Roberto Soto, were not indicted, as their cases were resolved through accusations in lieu of indictment.

Authorities say the bust dismantled a large-scale animal fighting operation in New Jersey.
