Woman killed in Columbia Heights after being struck by SUV during morning crossing

Washington, DC — A 61-year-old woman was killed Friday morning after being struck by a Toyota SUV while crossing the street in Columbia Heights, marking yet another fatal pedestrian crash in the city.

At approximately 8:48 a.m., officers were called to the intersection of 13th Street and Harvard Street NW for reports of a pedestrian-involved traffic crash. When police arrived, they found Rosa Cabezas, of Southeast D.C., unconscious and not breathing, suffering from critical injuries. DC Fire and EMS rushed her to a nearby hospital, but she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

According to the preliminary investigation, Cabezas had been crossing 13th Street when the driver of a Toyota Rav4 turned right from Harvard Street and struck her. The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

The incident occurred during the peak of the morning commute, prompting delays in the area as officers from the Major Crash Investigations Unit responded. No arrests have been made, and no charges have been announced as the investigation continues.

MPD is urging anyone with information or additional footage from the scene to contact them.
