NEW YORK, NY – 7-Eleven is set to close 272 locations across the United States in 2024, following a significant reduction in stores the previous year. The specifics regarding which stores will be affected and their closure dates remain undisclosed, as reported by CBS News. In 2023, the convenience store chain shuttered 184 stores nationwide.
The closures are part of a broader downsizing effort by the company.
Several 7-Eleven locations in New Jersey put on the block in 2022. These include stores in Barnegat, Butler, Colonia, Delran, Elmwood Park, Flemington, Hackettstown, Holmdel, Moorestown, Newark (three locations), Scotch Plains, Toms River, and Washington.
7-Eleven stores in Jackson and Lakehurst also closed.
In addition to the New Jersey stores already on the chopping block, 7-Eleven plans to sell a total of 73 stores under its banner, including Speedways, across 22 states. Speedways, acquired last year, are another chain affected by the planned sales. Prospective buyers will have the opportunity to acquire any number of the listed locations.
While the closures mark a setback for local communities who enjoy these stores, there remains hope that new owners will put these locations to good use. With increasing competition from southern chains entering New Jersey, the future of these properties remains uncertain.
