KANSAS CITY, MO – Authorities in Missouri are on the lookout for a small alligator that managed to escape from a petting zoo at Lakeview Middle School in Kansas City. The alligator, measuring 14 inches long, was last spotted around 11 a.m. Thursday during an event organized to celebrate the school year’s end.
The KC Pet Project reported that the alligator escaped while under the care of a third-party company hired to manage the petting zoo. Despite extensive searches of the school and surrounding areas, the alligator remains missing. Concerns are growing for the reptile’s welfare, especially since it was last seen with its mouth taped shut, rendering it unable to fend for itself.
Tori Fugate, Chief Communications Officer for the KC Pet Project, emphasized the vulnerability of the escaped alligator, noting its small size and inability to eat due to the taped mouth. The incident has also brought to light that the necessary animal show permits were not obtained by the school before hosting the event. Fugate stressed the importance of such permits to ensure the safety of both participants and animals at public events.
