Deputies arrested an armed suspect after a tense hour-long barricade on Forester Avenue that followed an earlier knife assault on a family member.
Cumberland, MD – A barricaded suspect armed with a knife was taken into custody Wednesday after a tense standoff with deputies in a residential neighborhood in Cumberland, according to the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were dispatched to the 500 block of Forester Avenue to serve a court order when the situation quickly escalated. Upon arrival, the individual barricaded himself inside a bedroom while holding a knife, prompting a controlled response by law enforcement.

Standoff lasted about an hour
During the incident, deputies discovered the suspect had allegedly assaulted a family member with the knife several hours before authorities arrived at the home.
Specialized units, including the Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Response Team (S.O.R.T.), negotiators, and the agency’s Technology Team, responded to assist with the developing barricade situation.
After approximately one hour, deputies were able to safely take the suspect into custody.

Authorities said the suspect assaulted a deputy during the arrest before being subdued by law enforcement.
Following the incident, the suspect was transported to UPMC for medical treatment. Officials have not yet released the individual’s identity.
Forester Avenue was temporarily closed during the law enforcement response before reopening once the situation was resolved. Charges against the suspect are pending as the investigation continues.
