Arrest Made in Hit-and-Run Death

NEW YORK CITY, NY – Following an investigation, the NYPD arrested Osman Zavala-Varela, a 36-year-old male from Hempstead, NY, on Wednesday.

He faces charges of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and failure to obey a traffic signal.

The incident in question occurred on Sunday, December 10, 2023, around 8:00 pm. Police responded to a collision on Hempstead Avenue and 223 Street where they found Gary Charlotin, a 66-year-old male from North Baldwin, NY, with severe injuries.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. The NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad determined that Charlotin was struck by a westbound sedan, which then left the scene. A second SUV also struck him and did not stop.
