ATV theft suspect flees after traffic stop in Howell Township

HOWELL TOWNSHIP, N.J. — A suspect fled on foot early Thursday after Howell Township police attempted to stop him on a stolen ATV, authorities said.

Around 3 a.m., Patrolman Brandon Rollo spotted an individual attempting to cross Route 9 at West Farms Road on an ATV. As Rollo exited his patrol vehicle to investigate, the suspect questioned the stop. At that moment, dispatch radioed that a nearby home on Stuart Street had just been burglarized and four ATVs were stolen.

According to police, the suspect overheard the broadcast and immediately fled the scene on foot.

Officers Maccia, Perez, Divona, and Nista, along with Sgt. Homiek, responded and established a perimeter. Sgt. Bondarew and his K9 unit attempted a track, but the suspect was not located.

All four ATVs were recovered and returned to the homeowner.

The investigation is ongoing, according to Howell Township Police.
