CATONSVILLE, MD — A Baltimore County police officer remains in guarded condition after being shot by an armed suspect outside the Wilkens precinct Thursday evening, authorities said.

The officer’s condition is dire at this time.

The officer, a six-year veteran of the department, was wounded in the precinct’s parking lot shortly after 7 p.m. He was transported to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, where he underwent surgery. The location is near the University of Maryland Baltimore County campus.

Dr. Thomas Scalea, physician-in-chief at Shock Trauma, said the officer is under close observation.

During a Thursday night news conference, Baltimore County Police Chief Robert O. McCullough highlighted the risks law enforcement officers face daily.

Police did not identify any suspects or motives related to the shooting.
