MIDLAND, Md. — A structure fire at a single-family home on Omara Avenue caused an estimated $20,000 in damage Monday evening, though quick action by firefighters and an unexpected water pipe break helped contain the blaze.
The fire broke out around 6:50 p.m. at 19714 Omara Avenue and was discovered by the homeowner, who reported smelling smoke and safely evacuated the rest of the family. No injuries were reported.
The Midland Volunteer Fire Company #1 responded with 30 firefighters and brought the fire under control within five minutes of arrival. The blaze originated in the basement wall and remains under investigation, officials said.
There were no fire alarms or sprinklers present in the home, though a smoke alarm was installed in the area, which was not protected. The fire department noted that a broken water pipe in the basement helped limit the spread of the fire.
The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced family. The homeowners were identified as Frances Warnick and Lisa Llwellyn.
