Bear Attacks Leave One Dog Dead, Another Injured in New Jersey

SPARTA, NJ — A series of bear attacks in Sparta Township has left one dog dead and another injured, according to local officials.

Police Chief Jeffery McCarrick reported that the attacks occurred near West Mountain Road, with the first incident happening on Tuesday, May 9, and the second on Sunday, May 13.

The initial attack took place on Graphic Boulevard, where a bear targeted multiple dogs. A subsequent encounter on Mountain Spring Drive—situated less than a mile from Sparta High School—resulted in further aggression towards pets.

McCarrick confirmed the fatal and injurious outcomes for two local dogs, though it remains unclear whether the same bear was involved in both incidents.
