BERLIN, Md. – A Worcester County retiree is starting the new year $100,000 richer after winning one of the top-tier prizes in the Maryland Lottery’s Holiday Raffle drawing. The Eastern Shore man, a retired federal worker, claimed his prize Jan. 13 at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore after learning his ticket was among the ten winning entries at the $100,000 level.
The longtime Lottery player said he bought several raffle tickets over the course of the game and made one final purchase in late December at the Ocean City Food Lion on Stephen Decatur Highway in Berlin. That last-minute decision turned into a life-changing win. While sipping coffee the morning after the Jan. 2 drawing, he checked his ticket—number 186723—and was stunned to discover it was worth $100,000. “I woke up my wife to tell her the good news,” he said.
In addition to the six-figure prize, he also won $50 on another ticket. The avid golfer said he plans to put his winnings into his savings account.
The Maryland Lottery Holiday Raffle ran from Nov. 3 through Jan. 1, featuring tickets priced at $20 each and numbered sequentially from 000001 through 237206. The game awarded one $1 million top prize, ten $100,000 prizes, three $50,000 prizes, and thousands of smaller prizes ranging from $50 to $500.
