Boston cop shot in Roxbury park chase, suspect in custody after gun battle

BOSTON, MA – A Boston Police officer was shot during a foot chase through a Roxbury park early Friday morning, sparking a gunfire exchange that ended with the suspect wounded and under arrest.

The confrontation erupted just after 12:45 a.m. when four officers from District B-2 were monitoring a group inside General Edward O. Gourdin African American Veterans Memorial Park. One man, later identified as 31-year-old Daiquan Rice, stood apart from the group and bolted as officers approached.

Police say Rice sprinted down Washington Street, cut through Archer Terrace, and reached Kenilworth Street before opening fire. A bullet struck an officer in the upper left arm. Officers then returned fire, hitting Rice and quickly taking him into custody outside 6 Kenilworth Street.

A loaded firearm with an extended magazine was recovered at the scene, along with two plastic bags containing a white, rock-like substance that allegedly fell from Rice’s pocket during the chase.

Both Rice and the injured officer were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Police said three additional officers also suffered non-life-threatening injuries during the chaotic pursuit.

Rice is now facing a long list of charges, including attempted murder, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of a large-capacity firearm, possession of ammunition without an FID card, possession of Class B drugs, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building. He remains hospitalized under police guard and is set to be arraigned in Roxbury District Court.
