Boy killed after wind takes bounce house at maryland baseball game

CHARLES COUNTY, MD — A child died at Regency Furniture Stadium on Friday when a wind gust lifted a moon bounce house during a Southern Maryland Blue Crabs baseball game.

The inflatable structure was reportedly carried 15 to 20 feet into the air, resulting in children falling to the playing field below.

Charles County EMS personnel, along with team trainers and several volunteer first responders present at the game, responded promptly to the accident.

Despite their rapid response, a five-year-old boy from La Plata suffered life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to Children’s Hospital by Maryland State Police (MSP) Trooper 2, where he was later pronounced dead. Another child with non-life-threatening injuries was also transported by MSP Trooper 7 for medical attention.

Reuben B. Collins, II, Esq., Commissioner President of Charles County, expressed deep condolences to the families affected. “We extend our deepest empathy to the children and their families during this difficult time,” Collins stated, appreciating the quick actions of the EMS and state police.

The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, represented by General Manager Courtney Knichel, had canceled all scheduled games and activities for Saturday, August 3, as the organization mourns the loss and focuses on supporting the families and attendees affected.

During the incident, players, families, and fans are offered counseling and support services.
