RHOSLC star Mary Cosby’s son Robert Jr dies at 23 after reported medical emergency
SALT LAKE CITY, UT – Robert Cosby Jr., the 23-year-old son of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star Mary Cosby and Bishop Robert Cosby Sr., has died following a reported medical emergency in Salt Lake City.
Salt Lake City police confirmed officers responded at approximately 6:14 p.m. Monday to a call involving a 23-year-old man. Authorities described the incident as a full arrest and medical emergency following a possible overdose. The case remains an active death investigation.
An official cause of death has not yet been released pending the medical examiner’s findings.
Mary Cosby and Robert Cosby Sr. issued a statement saying, “Our beloved son Robert Jr. has been called home to the Lord. Though our hearts ache, we take comfort in God’s promise and in knowing he is finally at peace.”
Robert Jr. had been released from Salt Lake County Metro Jail on February 3 after serving two months for charges related to violating a protective order involving his ex-wife, Alexiana Smokoff.
In late 2025, he pleaded guilty to assault and violation of a protective order. He was sentenced to 36 months of probation and 75 hours of community service. At the time, his attorney said he was taking responsibility and attempting to move forward.
Recent seasons of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City documented his struggles with substance abuse. During Season 5, he acknowledged addiction to Xanax, fentanyl, cocaine and other substances.
Earlier this year, during the Season 6 reunion, Mary Cosby described the situation as heavy and said she had stepped back to allow her son to face consequences.
Bravo host Andy Cohen publicly expressed condolences, calling the news devastatingly sad.
The investigation remains ongoing.
