CAMDEN, NJ – A settlement in June 2023 between the New Jersey Attorney General, the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), and Monk’s Amoco has resolved a 2018 case concerning hazardous leaks from underground storage tanks at the gas station in Camden. These leaks resulted in soil and groundwater contamination, including dangerous levels of gasoline.British Petroleum, the corporate successor to Monk’s Amoco, has agreed to take full responsibility for the cleanup of the soil and groundwater contamination affecting the site and the surrounding area. Additionally, British Petroleum will reimburse DEP $260,000 for previous cleanup efforts and pay up to $100,000 to the City of Camden. Any remaining funds from the sale of the property will go to DEP, ensuring that the cleanup burden does not fall on New Jersey taxpayers.
