Bronx Man Sentenced to 24 Years in Prison for Fatally Beating Mother with Baseball Bat

Bars from a prison jail cast a shadow on the floro.

BRONX, NY – Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announced yesterday that Steven Castro, a 43-year-old Bronx man, has been sentenced to 24 years in prison and five years post-release supervision for fatally beating his mother, Carmen Aponte, with a baseball bat in their Hunts Point apartment.

On April 21, Castro was sentenced by Bronx Supreme Court Justice Ralph Fabrizio after pleading guilty to first-degree Manslaughter on March 21.

The investigation revealed that Castro, jealous of the attention his mother gave to his brother’s children instead of his own, repeatedly struck her in the head with a baseball bat on October 28, 2020, killing her.

Castro later confessed to the crime and told investigators he disposed of the weapon in a nearby river. Assistant District Attorney Burim Namani prosecuted the case.
