CAMBRIDGE, MA – A mid-day investigation in a residential Cambridge neighborhood led to a foot chase across backyards and train tracks Friday, ending with the arrest of a wanted South Boston man and the recovery of a loaded handgun hidden beneath a deck. Officers say the suspect, already sought on multiple violent and firearm-related charges, attempted to flee before being found in a nearby shed.
At approximately 11:52 a.m. Friday, members of the Youth Violence Strike Force, working with Boston Housing Police, Massachusetts State Police, and Cambridge Police, were searching for 27-year-old Daryl Dirtion. He was wanted on five outstanding warrants issued out of Suffolk Superior Court and South Boston District Court.
Investigators locate suspect, recover hidden firearm
Dirtion was located in the area of Richdale Avenue, where officers recognized him. As officers approached, he fled on foot through a residential driveway and onto nearby train tracks. Officers pursued him and retraced his path, where they discovered a black Carhartt jacket concealed beneath the rear deck of a residence on Pemberton Street. Inside the jacket, officers recovered a loaded Glock 22 containing 15 rounds in the magazine.
Authorities said the recovery of the firearm came during the active search for Dirtion as he attempted to evade capture through surrounding properties.
Arrest made after shed standoff and taser deployment
The search concluded when Dirtion was found hiding inside a shed behind a residence on Middlesex Street. Officials said he resisted arrest and refused to follow commands. After verbal warnings were issued, a Massachusetts State Trooper deployed a taser, after which Dirtion complied and was taken into custody without further incident.
Emergency medical services evaluated Dirtion at the scene before transporting him to Boston Medical Center for further evaluation prior to booking.
Dirtion was already wanted on a series of charges, including carrying a firearm without a license, assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a family or household member, strangulation or suffocation, malicious destruction of property, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, number plate violation to conceal identity, and multiple violations of an active abuse prevention order.
In addition to the outstanding warrants, Massachusetts State Police said new charges will be filed in Cambridge District Court. Those include carrying a firearm without a license as a second offense, possession of a large capacity firearm and feeding device, possession of ammunition without an FID card, firearm violation with a prior violent or drug crime, breaking and entering for a misdemeanor, trespassing, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct.
