High-speed I-295 crash kills Capitol Heights man after vehicle slams into wall
Washington, DC – A deadly solo crash on Interstate 295 took the life of a 60-year-old man from Capitol Heights Saturday evening after his SUV veered across multiple lanes and smashed into a jersey wall, officials confirmed Monday.
The crash happened just after 5 p.m. on I-295 northbound near Exit 4, where witnesses reported a Jeep Grand Cherokee weaving through traffic at a high rate of speed before losing control. Emergency responders arrived quickly and transported the driver to a nearby hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The driver was identified as Jerome Bowman of Capitol Heights, MD. He was the sole occupant in the vehicle.
Investigators from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit are leading the inquiry into what caused the fatal accident. Early findings suggest excessive speed and erratic lane changes played a significant role.
There were no other vehicles directly involved in the incident, and no additional injuries were reported. The crash temporarily blocked several lanes as crews cleared the scene and launched their investigation.
Police are continuing to gather information and ask anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has relevant details to contact their tip line.
