Coast guard leads sweeping security crackdown at port of wilmington

Wilmington, DE – Coast Guard officials conducted a massive joint security operation at the Port of Wilmington on Tuesday, screening hundreds of trucks, containers, and vehicles as part of a multi-agency effort to enforce federal regulations and deter potential threats.

Led by the enforcement division of Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay, the operation was carried out in collaboration with nine local, state, and federal agencies under the authority of the Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA). The one-day sweep involved a comprehensive inspection of 131 commercial trucks and containers, 98 privately operated vehicles, and 616 exported cars, officials confirmed.

The Coast Guard reported that the team also inspected 78 shipping containers and 53 commercial vehicles during the coordinated operation, which focused on securing a key commercial hub along the East Coast.

“This operation underscores the power of strong partnerships between local, state, and federal agencies,” said Capt. Kate Higgins-Bloom, commander of Sector Delaware Bay. “These relationships are critical to protecting our port and ensuring the security of our region.”

Personnel from the Coast Guard’s response, prevention, and intelligence divisions were joined by officers from Customs and Border Protection, the Drug Enforcement Agency, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Transportation Security Administration, among others.

The operation was conducted under the MTSA, a law enacted to safeguard maritime infrastructure from major security incidents, including terrorism, hazardous materials breaches, or events causing mass casualties or economic disruption.

Authorities did not confirm any arrests or violations following the operation, but emphasized the importance of routine enforcement as part of national port security strategy.
