Coastal storm set to batter Jersey Shore with fierce winds and flooding

Seaside Heights, NJ – A powerful coastal storm is expected to sweep across the region late Wednesday night, bringing damaging winds, heavy rain, and coastal flooding through Friday.

Residents along the shore and inland communities are being urged to prepare now as the system strengthens offshore.

Officials warn that travel disruptions, power outages, and flooding could intensify as the storm reaches its peak Thursday night into Friday morning.

Key Points
• Gusts up to 50 mph may down trees and cause isolated power outages
• 1–3 inches of rainfall could lead to localized flooding in low-lying areas
• Coastal flooding and beach erosion likely during high tides Thursday and Friday

High winds threaten power and travel
Forecasters with the National Weather Service in Mount Holly say wind gusts between 40 and 50 mph are likely, especially near coastal towns. These gusts could topple branches and power lines, leading to scattered outages and hazardous travel conditions. Jersey Central Power & Light advises residents to report outages directly by calling 1-888-544-4877 or visiting firstenergycorp.com, and to reserve 911 calls strictly for emergencies.

Coastal and inland flooding expected
Tidal flooding is expected to peak during Thursday afternoon and evening high tides, with additional flooding possible Friday morning. The combination of heavy rainfall and onshore winds may cause widespread minor flooding and some moderate flooding in low-lying coastal neighborhoods. Inland areas could see ponding on roads and water collecting in poor-drainage zones as rainfall totals approach three inches.

Marine hazards and surf conditions worsen
Marine conditions will deteriorate rapidly as gale-force winds build seas to 10–15 feet offshore. Dangerous surf and beach erosion are expected along the Jersey Shore, and officials are urging boaters to remain in port until conditions improve. Lifeguards and coastal patrols are warning the public to stay out of the water during the height of the storm due to life-threatening rip currents.

Emergency readiness urged ahead of the storm
Emergency management officials across the region are urging residents to secure outdoor items, charge electronics, and prepare for possible power interruptions. Flood-prone communities are advised to move vehicles to higher ground and avoid driving through standing water. The National Weather Service will continue issuing updated statements and warnings as the storm moves inland late Wednesday night.
