Police car at the scene of a criminal related incident

STAFFORD, VA — A Colonial Beach man is facing multiple charges after allegedly causing a three-vehicle crash while driving under the influence and then attempting to flee the scene on foot. The incident occurred late on August 22, near the intersection of Garrisonville Road and Salisbury Drive.

At approximately 9:12 p.m., Deputy X.D. Bates responded to the scene, where witnesses reported that the at-fault driver had fled the area. Thanks to a detailed description provided by witnesses, Deputy Bates located the suspect, later identified as Jonathan Galvan Velasco, 39, stumbling near Mine Road.

Velasco, who displayed clear signs of intoxication, admitted to being the driver involved in the crash and acknowledged consuming several alcoholic drinks before getting behind the wheel. Despite his attempts to blame the other drivers for the collision, witnesses confirmed his involvement. An open container of alcohol was found in his vehicle, and it was revealed that Velasco’s driver’s license had been revoked due to a previous DUI conviction from the prior year.

Velasco was arrested and charged with driving under the influence second offense within five years, driving while revoked, felony hit and run, misdemeanor hit and run, drinking while driving, and following too closely. He is currently being held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail on a $5,000 secured bond.
