While U.S. President Joe Biden and the United States grapple with a rising shortage of oil and gas, Canada is experiencing a similar shortage, a maple syrup shortage. This, according to NPR has forced the country to tap into its own strategic reserve of maple syrup.
“The Canadian group Quebec Maple Syrup Producers recently announced it was releasing about 50 million pounds of its strategic maple syrup reserves — about half of the total stockpile,” NPR reported.
The producers make 70% of the world’s supply of maple syrup and its biggest customer is the United States.
2021’s short and warm spring shortened the maple harvesting season, leading producers to tap into the reserves to meet demand.
