Cumberland Police Apprehend Suspect in Overnight Assault

CUMBERLAND, MD—Cumberland City Police made an arrest early Monday after responding to a reported assault on the 300 block of Williams Street. Officers were dispatched to the scene at around 12:30 AM where they found a victim with injuries to the neck and face.

The victim reported being strangled and struck in the face by 42-year-old John Edward Northcraft. Following the incident, police arrested Northcraft and transported him to the Allegany County Detention Center for central booking.

Northcraft has been charged with first and second-degree assault. He appeared before a District Court Commissioner and was held without bond.

The victim received on-scene medical treatment for the injuries sustained during the assault.
