Suspect arrested nearly two years after fatal shooting in Northeast D.C.
Washington, D.C. – Nearly two years after 22-year-old Matthew Ginyard was gunned down in the early morning hours on a Northeast D.C. street, police have arrested a suspect in connection with his murder.
On Thursday, members of the Metropolitan Police Department’s Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force located and arrested 22-year-old Melvin Nathaniel Lee Jr., of Northeast D.C. He has been charged with First Degree Murder while Armed pursuant to a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant.
The fatal shooting took place on March 22, 2024, around 2:16 a.m., when officers from the Sixth District responded to reports of gunfire in the 300 block of 59th Street, Northeast. Upon arrival, they discovered Ginyard suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators have not released details about the motive, relationship between the victim and the suspect, or how Lee was identified during the investigation. The arrest comes after an extended search by law enforcement, ending in Lee’s apprehension on January 22.
Ginyard was a resident of Temple Hills, Maryland. His death marked another violent act in the early months of 2024, contributing to the city’s ongoing effort to combat gun violence.
