DC man dies nearly a year after shooting police upgrade case to homicide

Washington, DC – Nearly one year after he was gunned down in broad daylight, a 36-year-old man has died from his injuries, prompting police to reclassify the case as a homicide.

Kevin Dextraze was shot on Oct. 2 in the 1200 block of North Capitol Street NW, where officers responding to gunfire found him critically wounded. He was taken to a hospital and remained under care until his death on Sept. 7.

Authorities confirmed Tuesday that the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled Dextraze’s death a homicide, citing complications from the gunshot wounds.

Police arrested Damon Bradford, 27, weeks after the shooting on Nov. 13. At that time, he faced charges of Assault with Intent to Kill while Armed. Officials said upgraded charges are now being pursued in light of Dextraze’s death.

The investigation remains ongoing as prosecutors review the case.
