Fatal Pedestrian Crash on I-495 Under Investigation

Wilmington, DE – The Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred on I-495 near Edgemoor, resulting in the death of a 38-year-old woman from Elkton, Maryland.

The incident happened on Sunday at approximately 11:43 p.m. A white 2015 Honda Accord was traveling northbound in the left lane when the pedestrian, who was not wearing reflective clothing or carrying a flashlight, attempted to cross the highway. The pedestrian was struck by the Honda in the left lane.

Investigations revealed that the pedestrian had been operating a black 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, found about a quarter-mile north of the crash site with its hazard lights on. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, and her identity is being withheld pending notification of her family.

The driver of the Honda, a 47-year-old man from Bear, Delaware, and two passengers, a 46-year-old woman from New Smyrna Beach, Florida, and a 29-year-old man from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, were treated for minor injuries and released from a local hospital.

The roadway was closed for approximately three hours for investigation and cleanup.
