Governor Murphy Announces Special Election to Fill Seat of Deceased Congressman

TRENTON, NJ — Governor Phil Murphy has issued a writ of election for New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District following the death of U.S. Representative Donald M. Payne Jr. on April 24. The Governor’s writ calls for a special primary election to be held on Tuesday, July 16, and a special general election on Wednesday, September 18.

The writ specifies that nomination petitions for those seeking a party nomination must be submitted by 4:00 PM on Friday, May 10. Furthermore, independent candidates must file their direct nomination petitions by the day of the special primary election. This action, required under New Jersey statutes N.J.S.A. 19:3-27 and N.J.S.A. 19:27-4, aims to fill the vacancy for the term ending January 3, 2025. The Secretary of State has been directed to adopt any necessary guidelines to implement the writ effectively.
