RICHMOND, VA – Jose Gonzalez Flores, a 33-year-old Guatemalan national, was sentenced to four years in prison for illegally reentering the United States after being deported.

Court documents reveal that in August 2018, while unlawfully in the U.S., Gonzalez Flores was involved in a fatal car accident. He was driving a pickup truck when he collided with the rear of a sedan carrying a family of four, leading to the death of their four-year-old child. Following the accident, Gonzalez Flores fled the scene but was arrested a few days later.

In April 2019, Gonzalez Flores was convicted in Chesterfield County Circuit Court of involuntary manslaughter and drug possession. He received a 20-year sentence, with all but three-and-a-half years suspended. The state judge also explicitly ordered him not to illegally reenter the U.S. following his prison term and subsequent deportation.

Despite this order, Gonzalez Flores was deported to Guatemala in January 2022 and unlawfully reentered the U.S. a year later. He was found in the Eastern District of Virginia, leading to his current four-year prison sentence for illegal reentry.
