MALTA, N.Y. — A man armed with a hunting-style rifle was fatally shot by troopers after he opened fire on the New York State Police barracks in Malta on Wednesday afternoon.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:43 p.m. on Route 9, near the State Police Saratoga Barracks. Authorities said the male suspect approached the station and discharged multiple rounds at the facility before troopers returned fire, killing him.

New York State Police confirmed there is “no current threat to public safety” in the aftermath of the shooting.

Road closed as police investigate

State Route 9 has been shut down between the Route 67 traffic circle at Dunning Street and Saratoga Village Boulevard while investigators remain on the scene.

Officials have not yet released the identity of the shooter or a possible motive. The rifle used in the shooting was described as a “hunting-style” firearm.

Investigation continues

The New York State Police said the investigation remains active and ongoing. No troopers were reported injured in the exchange.
