Hackensack cops revive 78 year old man after sudden cardiac arrest

Life saved after Hackensack officers rush to cardiac arrest call

HACKENSACK, N.J. — Quick action by several Hackensack police officers helped save the life of a 78-year-old man who suffered cardiac arrest near the Midtown Bridge Approach on March 4.

Officers Ryan Conlon and Frank Caneja of the Hackensack Police Emergency Services Unit, along with Patrol Bureau officers Jems Peralta and Robert Oropeza, responded to the emergency call reporting that the elderly man had fallen and gone into cardiac arrest.

When officers arrived, they immediately began life-saving measures. Police said the officers, who have advanced medical training, performed CPR and used emergency medical equipment to treat the man.

According to the Hackensack Police Department, officers used an automated external defibrillator (AED), a bag-valve-mask, and oxygen during the emergency response. The patient was successfully resuscitated before being transported to a hospital for further treatment.

Police officials said the coordinated efforts of the responding officers were critical in saving the man’s life.

The department noted that all Hackensack police officers receive CPR training, and those with Emergency Medical Technician certifications are able to maintain that specialization. Officers Conlon and Caneja both hold EMT certifications, which officials said contributed to the successful resuscitation.

Hackensack Police Chief Michael Antista also thanked the Hackensack Fire Department and Hackensack University Medical Center ALS/BLS teams, who responded to the scene and continued treatment for the patient.

Officials said the incident demonstrates the importance of CPR training and coordination between emergency responders.
