High wind watch issued for jersey shore counties as storm approaches

FREEHOLD, NJ – The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Watch for parts of central and southern New Jersey beginning Sunday morning, warning of potentially damaging gusts and hazardous travel conditions.

The advisory covers Eastern and Western Monmouth, Coastal Ocean, Ocean, and Southeastern Burlington counties, where winds could reach up to 60 miles per hour.

Forecasters say the system will bring a mix of heavy rain and strong northeast winds from early Sunday through late Sunday night.

Strong winds and rain to intensify Sunday

Sustained northeast winds of 25 to 35 mph are expected to develop Sunday morning, with gusts increasing through the afternoon and evening. By nightfall, the storm could bring widespread downed trees and power lines, raising the risk of extended outages across coastal and inland communities.

Motorists, particularly those operating high-profile vehicles, are urged to use caution as travel may become difficult on bridges and open roadways.

Extended rain through Columbus Day

The storm is forecast to linger into Monday, with steady rain and gusty winds persisting through Columbus Day. Temperatures will hover in the mid-60s during the day and drop to the low 50s at night, according to the National Weather Service.

Rainfall totals could exceed two inches across some areas by Monday night, with coastal flooding and beach erosion also possible along the Jersey Shore.

Residents are advised to secure outdoor items, charge devices, and monitor weather updates as the system moves closer to the state.
