Woman wins $100K from scratch ticket while decorating for holidays
Oxon Hill, MD – A scratch-off player from Prince George’s County turned a weekend decorating session into a six-figure payday after a lucky instinct—and a new ticket—brought her a $100,000 top prize just one day after the game’s release.
The Oxon Hill woman, a food service manager, bought three $10 Red 5’s Doubler tickets on Saturday, December 6, at Harbor Market on Livingston Road. Hours later, while setting up holiday decorations, she remembered the tickets and decided it was time to scratch.
Her routine involved revealing all 25 numbers in the play area before checking for matches. When she saw the number 30—listed both as a winning number and in the play area—she scratched off the prize box below it and saw the life-changing figure: $100,000.
Unsure at first if it was real, she used the Maryland Lottery app to scan her ticket. The message was clear: “take to lottery.” Four days later, on December 10, she was at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore, claiming the prize she’d long believed would come.
The winner said her strategy has always been to purchase newly released games, betting that they offer better odds before major prizes are claimed. The Red 5’s Doubler had just debuted on December 5, and hers was the first top prize claimed from the game.
She doesn’t plan to retire immediately, but said the unexpected windfall brings that possibility closer. For now, she plans to put some of the winnings toward remodeling her home. Outside of work, she enjoys spending her time gardening.
Harbor Market, the retailer that sold the lucky ticket, will receive a $1,000 bonus from the Maryland Lottery.
Eight $100,000 top prizes remain in the Red 5’s Doubler game, along with multiple second- and third-tier prizes still unclaimed across the state.
