ELKRIDGE, MD — A Howard County police officer picked up more than just gas and food during a recent stop at a Royal Farms store — he also walked away with a $50,004 Powerball win.

The officer, who described himself as an occasional lottery player, said he purchased a $10 quick pick ticket for the July 14 drawing while inside the store on Lark Brown Drive. The ticket matched four of the first five numbers plus the Powerball, earning a third-tier prize. A second combination on the same ticket added another $4.

“I did a double-take when I compared the numbers to my ticket,” he said after claiming his prize on July 18.

The winnings, he said, will go toward his family’s savings. “It’s comforting to know that we have this extra cushion,” he added.
