Hudson County authorities investigate fatal fire in Jersey City

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force is investigating a fatal fire that occurred Wednesday morning at a residential building on Garfield Avenue, authorities said.

Jersey City firefighters responded to a call shortly after 10 a.m. about a fire at 121 Garfield Avenue. Upon arrival, crews found flames coming from a third-floor bedroom in the three-story building, according to a statement from the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.

Firefighters discovered an injured man inside the building during their suppression efforts. The victim, identified as 56-year-old Pablo Renta of Jersey City, was transported to Jersey City Medical Center. He was pronounced dead just before 7 p.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Arson Task Force and the Jersey City Fire Department.
