ASBURY PARK, NJ – A Cardinal Provisions employee in Asbury Park has been confirmed to have Hepatitis A, prompting an inspection and advisory from the Monmouth County Health Department (MCHD).
Upon being notified by a healthcare provider, the MCHD conducted an inspection at the 513 Bangs Avenue establishment. No food safety violations were identified. Cardinal Provisions voluntarily shut down and only resumed operations after vaccinating all potentially exposed staff.
The investigation determined the infected employee worked on the following days: September 7-10, 12, 14, and 21. Although transmission of Hepatitis A through food handlers is rare, patrons who visited Cardinal Provisions during these dates should consider getting vaccinated within two weeks of their last exposure.
They are also advised to watch for symptoms for up to 50 days, practice frequent handwashing, and consult a healthcare provider if symptoms develop.
Hepatitis A can lead to symptoms including loss of appetite, nausea, fatigue, fever, stomach pain, and changes in urine and stool color. In some cases, jaundice may also develop. Individuals can fall ill up to seven weeks after exposure.
