WASHINGTON, D.C. – In an uncommon display of bipartisan agreement, the U.S. Senate passed the “SHow Our Respect To the Senate” (SHORTS) Act on Wednesday, mandating that Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) adhere to traditional dress code regulations while on the Senate floor.
Sen. John Fetterman, known for his casual attire including gym shorts and a hoodie, has been a notable exception to Senate dress standards. His preference for informal wear was reportedly related to his desire to identify with working-class Americans. In response to criticisms, Fetterman displayed a dismissive attitude, challenging his critics with sarcastic comments.
The resolution to uphold the Senate’s dress code was initiated by Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT). It passed without any objections, indicating a unanimous agreement among Senators that traditional attire should be maintained on the Senate floor.
After the passage of the SHORTS Act, Fetterman took to social media to mock the resolution, posting a meme featuring actor Kevin James. The new law, however, now obliges him to comply with the Senate’s longstanding dress code.
