Authorities say order was restored after a crowd disturbance outside the gym led police to request assistance from neighboring departments.

Piscataway, NJ – A large disturbance involving numerous individuals broke out Tuesday night during a basketball game at Piscataway High School, prompting local police to request assistance from nearby departments to restore order.

The incident unfolded during the game outside the school’s gymnasium, where a significant number of individuals became involved in the disturbance.

Piscataway Township police said they called in neighboring law enforcement agencies out of an abundance of caution to help manage the situation and ensure the safety of students, staff, and attendees.

During the response, a photograph circulated showing a police officer carrying a rifle at the scene, prompting questions from community members.

Police clarified that Piscataway Township officers did not display firearms while handling the situation, in accordance with department policy.

Officials said some assisting agencies, however, have operational procedures that include the visible presence of rifles during certain responses.

Order restored without further incident

Authorities said the disturbance was brought under control without additional problems, and attendees were able to leave the school grounds safely.

Police thanked school administrators, assisting law enforcement agencies, and members of the community for their cooperation during the incident.

Officials added that maintaining a safe and welcoming environment at school events remains a top priority.
