A Massachusetts family had a terrifying experience when a large ice chunk, weighing between 15 to 20 pounds, plummeted from the sky and struck their home on Sunday night.
Jeff Ilg and Amelia Rainville, along with their two children, were unharmed in the incident but were shocked by the loud impact. “We heard an explosion, basically,” Ilg recounted, describing the sound as the loudest bang he had ever heard.
The couple initially thought the house had been struck by lightning, but a subsequent inspection revealed a giant partial block of ice on the back step and scattered debris in the backyard and on the roof. They suspect the ice may have fallen from an airplane traveling to Boston Logan International Airport.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has confirmed it is investigating the incident. The extent of the damage to the home has not yet been fully assessed, and the source of the ice remains undetermined.
