Alexandria man wins $111K jackpot playing Virginia Lottery’s online game The Lamp

Alexandria, VA — An Alexandria resident scored a six-figure payday after hitting a $111,574 jackpot while playing The Lamp, one of the Virginia Lottery’s progressive online games.

The winner, Nebiyu Demissie, was playing through the Virginia Lottery’s mobile app when the jackpot hit. The Lamp is among dozens of instant online games available through the Lottery’s app and website, featuring a growing prize pool and odds of 1 in 3.55 for winning a prize.

Demissie’s big win highlights the increasing popularity of the Lottery’s digital offerings. In addition to instant games, online players can purchase tickets for major draw games including Powerball, Mega Millions, Cash4Life, Pick 3, Pick 4, Pick 5, and Cash 5 with EZ Match. Players must be at least 18 and physically located in Virginia to play online.

All Virginia Lottery profits benefit K-12 education. Last fiscal year, Alexandria received more than $4.5 million in Lottery funds for public schools. Across the state, the Lottery generated more than $901 million for education in Fiscal Year 2025, accounting for about 10 percent of Virginia’s K-12 school budget.
