Man arrested after allegedly threatening Utica residents with meat cleaver

UTICA, NY — A Utica man was arrested Thursday evening following a violent encounter in which he allegedly threatened individuals with a large knife and attempted to force entry into a home, according to Utica Police.

Officers responded around 6:45 p.m. on March 20 to the 900 block of Schuyler Street for a report of menacing behavior. Witnesses told police that a man known to them had returned to the area with a large knife after an earlier disturbance.

The suspect reportedly attempted to break into the residence by smashing windows, but the victims secured themselves inside. Officers located the suspect shortly afterward inside a nearby residence.

Police identified the suspect as 42-year-old Somxay Sysamouth. He was arrested without incident, and a meat cleaver-style knife was recovered.

Sysamouth is charged with two counts of menacing in the second degree, criminal mischief in the fourth degree, and criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree.
