Man Caught Switching Plates in Attempted Car Theft

CUMBERLAND, MD – Brian Rothstein, a 34-year-old man from Randolph, MA, was arrested last Friday on charges of attempted motor vehicle theft. The Cumberland City Police Department responded to a report from the 12000 block of Willowbrook Rd.

The vehicle’s owner reported observing the trunk of their car open in the parking lot. Upon inspection, they found Rothstein next to their car attempting to remove its license plate. The investigation revealed that Rothstein had taken license plates from another vehicle and was attempting to switch them with the intention of stealing the car.

Upon confrontation by the owner, Rothstein was detained and the police were contacted. Rothstein now faces charges of Attempted Motor Vehicle/Unlawful Taking, Rogue and Vagabond, Malicious Destruction Of Property, and Disorderly Conduct.

Rothstein made his initial appearance before the District Court Commissioner. He is currently being held at the Allegany County Detention Center on a $3500 bond.

The Cumberland City Police Department is urging anyone with relevant information to come forward.
