Man Fatally Shot in Officer-Involved Shooting in Newark Identified

NEWARK, NJ – The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office has released the identity of the man who was fatally shot during an officer-involved shooting that took place on May 3, 2023, in Newark. The deceased man, Everett Rand, 29, of Newark, was involved in a violent encounter with Newark Police Officers Steven Ferreira and Ryan Castro following a double homicide that had occurred earlier in the day.

The incident took place near a residential property on Johnson Avenue, where the double homicide was reported. Upon arrival, the officers were confronted by Rand, who was armed.

What transpired next remains under investigation, but it ended with the officers firing their weapons, resulting in Rand’s death.

Both officers have been placed on administrative leave, as is standard procedure, pending the outcome of the investigation. The Attorney General’s Office has taken over the investigation, as mandated by state law for deaths that occur during encounters with law enforcement officers.
