Man found dead in Jersey City fire as arson task force investigates

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — A man was found dead Friday evening after a fire broke out near 1000 Newark Avenue, prompting an investigation by the Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force.

The Jersey City Fire Department responded to the scene shortly after 6 p.m. and extinguished the fire. During their operations, firefighters discovered the remains of an unidentified male in a fire-damaged makeshift shelter.

The man was pronounced dead at approximately 6:49 p.m. The cause and manner of his death remain under investigation, pending the findings of the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

Authorities have not released details on what may have caused the fire. The Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force, with assistance from the Jersey City Fire Department, is leading the investigation.
