Manhunt for Escaped Prisoner Ongoing in New Jersey

NEWARK, N.J. — Law enforcement officials are searching for Nicholas Voutsas, a 25-year-old inmate who escaped Thursday morning from a New Jersey Department of Health medical transport van near University Hospital.

Voutsas, a Tier 2 registered sex offender, was last seen around 9 a.m. in the area of South Orange Avenue and Bergen Street in Newark. He was wearing a burgundy or maroon winter coat at the time of his escape.

The New Jersey Human Services Police Department has charged Voutsas with escape. Authorities have not disclosed details on how he fled from the transport vehicle.

The New Jersey State Police Fugitive Unit is leading the search and is asking for the public’s assistance in locating Voutsas.
