ST. MARY’S COUNTY, MD – A 26-year-old man died early Saturday following a fireworks accident, marking Maryland’s second fireworks-related death in 2023.

Deputy State Fire Marshals were called to the 19900 block of Poplar Hill Creek Lane in Leonardtown around 2:45 a.m. The victim, identified as William Michael McFann of Piney Point, was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators revealed that McFann had placed a fireworks mortar tube on his upper chest before igniting it, resulting in a fatal explosion.

This follows a similar tragedy that occurred a few months ago. On July 5, another man, Damon Hammond, 20, died in Waldorf after a firework mortar he was holding exploded, causing fatal injuries.

State Fire Marshal Brian S. Geraci emphasized the dangers of handling fireworks, stating, “A family’s life has been changed forever. This is a tragic reminder that fireworks should be left to the professionals. The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend public displays throughout the state.”
