UTICA, N.Y. — A 39-year-old man was fatally shot and a police officer injured Friday night after gunfire erupted near James Street and Howard Avenue, prompting a chaotic and violent scene that led to multiple arrests.

Utica Police and Fire units responded around 10:40 p.m. to reports of a gunshot victim. Upon arrival, they found the man surrounded by a large crowd. Emergency personnel attempting to render aid were physically obstructed and accosted by members of the group, police said. One Utica officer was injured in the confrontation and taken to Wynn Hospital.

Despite efforts by fire and emergency crews to administer lifesaving care during transport, the victim was pronounced dead at the hospital. Authorities confirmed he was a 39-year-old male from Utica, though his name has not yet been released pending family notification.

While first responders were at the hospital, a second gunshot victim arrived via private vehicle. Police said the man had been shot in the leg at the same intersection. His injuries were not life-threatening.

During the initial crime scene investigation, multiple altercations broke out among bystanders. A separate group at James Street and Seymour Avenue began physically fighting officers, resulting in the arrest of five individuals on various charges.

Additional disturbances erupted at Wynn Hospital, leading to an increased police presence to restore order. The hospital later resumed normal operations.
