Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced that Sharif Brown, 37, has been sentenced to 25 years-to-life in prison for the shooting death of a Jamaica, Queens man. The defendant was convicted last month of gunning down the 22-year-old victim in December 2014.
District Attorney Katz said, “A jury weighed all the evidence at trial and found the defendant guilty of this brutal killing. Disputes should never escalate to gun violence. The victim’s brother and the defendant were friends. The defendant killed the victim after a verbal dispute between the three of them and other people. One man is dead and the other has been sentenced by the Court to prison as punishment for his crimes.”
Brown, of 140th Street in Jamaica, was found guilty of murder in the second degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree in October following a two-week-long trial before Queens Supreme Court Justice Ira Margulis. Today Justice Margulis sentenced Brown to 25 years-to-life in prison.
According to trial records, the defendant and Anderson Delgado became embroiled in an argument on the afternoon of December 27, 2014. The two men lived on the same block and were acquaintances. Without warning Brown pulled out a gun and shot the 22-year-old victim in the head, killing Mr. Delgado.
DA Katz said, during the trial, the jury was presented with video surveillance evidence showing the defendant firing the weapon at Mr. Delgado. Police also recovered the weapon in Brown’s home.
Assistant District Attorneys Robert Hanophy and Kevin Higgins, the Bureau Chief and Deputy Bureau Chief, of the DA’s Criminal Court Bureau, prosecuted the case, under the supervision of Executive Assistant District Attorney of Criminal Practice and Policy Division Angela M. Albertus.
