Maryland Lottery Scratch Off Ticket Gives $100,000 Surprise to Retired UPS Worker

Baltimore, MD – A retired UPS worker and avid coin collector is $100,000 richer after hitting one of the top prizes on a Maryland Lottery scratch-off ticket.

The winner scored big on the $100,000 Crossword game after buying a $10 ticket at Whitey’s Liquors on North Hammonds Ferry Road in Linthicum. He said his choice was easy, as he only plays crossword-themed scratch-offs.

He purchased the ticket Thursday and discovered the win the following day. The Maryland Lottery confirmed the prize on Oct. 1. The winner, who enjoys collecting rare coins in retirement, has not yet revealed plans for the money.

Whitey’s Liquors will also receive a $1,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket. The crossword game launched in August with nine top prizes; seven remain unclaimed along with numerous smaller payouts.

For one Baltimore hobbyist, a crossword puzzle added up to a six-figure fortune.
