GAITHERSBURG, Md. — The Montgomery County Department of Police announced the sudden and unexpected passing of K-9 Monte, an 8 ½-year-old Belgian Malinois/German Shepherd mix who served the department with distinction for over six years.
Monte, who was imported from Slovakia in May 2018, quickly became a vital part of the police force after being paired with his handler, Corporal Phil Brower. The two earned certification in patrol work and controlled dangerous substances (CDS) detection, playing a critical role in numerous apprehensions.
Among Monte’s achievements was tracking down an armed homicide suspect in the woods, preventing the suspect from reaching a loaded handgun. Monte’s actions that day were credited with ensuring the safety of his fellow officers and the community.
“Monte loved police work. It was his favorite thing, and he came to work each day full of excitement and enthusiasm,” said Cpl Brower, who shared that Monte’s work made the job safer for officers and the community alike.
On Dec. 18, after completing a shift that included clearing a commercial building for officers, Monte showed signs of distress. He was rushed to an emergency veterinarian, where tests revealed internal bleeding caused by numerous tumors on his liver. Surgery was not an option, and Monte passed away peacefully that evening in the arms of Cpl Brower, his wife Julee, and their daughter Katelyn.
Monte’s legacy includes his contributions to the department and the creation of the “Iron Dog,” a three-mile obstacle course turned charity event for Spike’s K9 Fund, which supports police K-9 units nationwide.
Monte was more than a police dog to the Brower family—he was a loyal companion who will be deeply missed.
K-9 Monte, a decorated police dog who protected his community and inspired his colleagues, will never be forgotten.
