New York City is called a lot of things by a lot of people, but there doesn’t seem to be a single shred of evidence that New Yorkers call their city the Port-Au-Prince of America.
“We call New York City the Port-Au-Prince of America. We feel the pain our Haitian neighbors feel as the situation grows dire. To the people of Haiti and our own Haitian community here in New York City, know that we stand with you today and always,” Mayor Adams said.
According to Google, the phrase was never publicly recorded prior to his claim.
“I’ve never heard anyone, anywhere, at any time, call NYC the Port-au-Prince of America,” said Clifton Duncan.
“This is FAKE. No one on earth calls New York City the Port-Au-Prince of America,” said Emil Vacale.

One commenter joked, “I think you misheard Americans calling New York City the port-a-potty of America.”
The comment, made by Adams on X, formerly Twitter, was flagged for misinformation by readers on the platform.
According to the New York Post, when asked for comment on the Mayor’s post, a city hall spokesperson said, “It’s a shame that the Post is focused on a link to a Wikipedia page instead of Mayor Adams’ efforts to support those in Haiti and New York who are struggling.”
